Monetary policy divergence between the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan remains the dominant driver of USD/JPY positioning near 159 in mid-August 2026. Persistent interest-rate differentials, with U.S. yields elevated relative to Japanese rates, underpin trader consensus around the 150-170 bands that together capture nearly 99% probability across the three leading outcomes. Recent joint interventions and mounting speculation over a September BOJ hike have tempered yen weakness but not reversed it, while Japanese fiscal expansion and structural outflows continue to weigh on the currency. Upcoming U.S. CPI and payrolls releases, alongside any further BOJ communications, will likely determine whether the pair settles nearer the lower or upper end of the tightly contested range.
