U.S. diplomatic presence in Damascus has remained suspended since 2012 amid Syria’s civil war, with the Czech Republic handling protecting-power duties and no routine consular services available. In May 2025 the U.S. flag returned to the ambassador’s residence, signaling initial normalization after the Assad regime’s collapse and the rise of transitional authorities led by Ahmed al-Sharaa. February 2026 brought formal congressional notification of a phased reopening plan under the Trump administration, with spending authorized but no timeline or personnel return date specified. July 2026 saw Trump meet al-Sharaa at the NATO summit and launch the formal process to remove Syria from the state sponsors of terrorism list, easing legal barriers to full embassy operations. Security conditions, delisting progress, and congressional reporting requirements continue to shape the pace of any permanent reopening.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if the U.S. government announces the reopening of its embassy in Damascus or if such a reopening is otherwise confirmed by 11:59 PM ET on the specified date. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No".
An official announcement made within this market’s timeframe will qualify for a "Yes" resolution regardless of whether an actual embassy opening subsequently takes place within the timeframe.
Any opening of a U.S. embassy in Damascus will qualify regardless of its exact location.
Announcements that do not clearly commit to opening an embassy, such as general diplomatic statements, exploratory comments, or partial/conditional steps, will not count.
The resolution source will be official statements from the Governments of the U.S. and Syria; however, a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.
