Iceland's closely divided electorate heads into the August 29 referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations, with recent polls showing support hovering near or slightly above 50 percent amid persistent splits over sovereignty, fisheries policy, and economic alignment under the EEA framework. The centre-left coalition government's decision to advance the vote reflects domestic priorities and evolving Arctic security considerations tied to transatlantic relations, while the EU Council has signaled readiness to restart talks if approved. A narrow outcome would likely hinge on turnout among undecided voters and any final-week shifts in campaign messaging from major parties, with a positive result paving the way for renewed negotiations potentially subject to a later membership vote.
