The September 20, 2026, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Landtag election features the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) polling first at 35–37 percent, ahead of the incumbent SPD at 28–32 percent, with the Left, CDU, Greens, and others trailing further behind. Trader consensus assigns AfD an elevated probability of emerging as the strongest party, reflecting its consistent lead in recent Infratest dimap and Forsa surveys conducted in late August. The SPD has narrowed the gap through gains tied to Minister President Manuela Schwesig’s personal popularity, which also supports potential post-election options such as a continued SPD–Left arrangement or a three-party coalition if the Greens clear the five-percent threshold. Other parties maintain a firm stance against partnering with the AfD, limiting its path to government formation despite its frontrunner status.
