This market will resolve to "Yes" if Google Maps displays "Lake America," "Lake of America" or similar as the label for the body of water currently known as the "Lake Ontario" for the majority of users within the United States by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. Changes which appear only in experimental features, beta versions, or subnational regional variants, will not qualify for a “Yes” resolution. If both "Lake America" and "Lake Ontario" are used to label the body of water, this will qualify for a “Yes” resolution. The resolution source will be Google Maps (maps.google.com) however a consensus of credible reporting may also be used. **President Donald Trump’s August 25, 2026, Truth Social post floated “serious consideration” of renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” amid stalled U.S.-Canada trade talks and new tariffs, echoing his earlier Gulf of Mexico executive order.** No formal proclamation, Board on Geographic Names action, or GNIS database update has occurred. Google Maps applies U.S. federal name changes only after official sources are revised and follows longstanding practice of displaying local names for cross-border features such as the Great Lakes, which are jointly managed under the International Joint Commission and 1989 U.S.-Canada geographic naming agreements. The proposal remains at the rhetorical stage, faces procedural and diplomatic hurdles for a shared waterway, and lacks the concrete federal implementation that previously prompted Google’s U.S.-only updates. Traders therefore assign an 80 percent probability that Google Maps will not display “Lake America” for Lake Ontario by the end of 2026.
