Andy Burnham’s debut PMQs on September 2 centered on surging UK borrowing costs and fiscal pressures, with opposition leader Kemi Badenoch pressing him on taxes, welfare cuts, and defence spending targets. Burnham stressed “fiscal responsibility,” highlighted early VAT and business-rate relief measures, blamed prior Conservative policy for market turbulence, and avoided committing to specific budget details ahead of the October statement. Traders tracking the next session on September 9 will focus on whether economic volatility or backbench questions on defence force clearer signals, as historical PMQs patterns show new leaders often refine messaging around fiscal rules and spending priorities in early weeks.
