The open seat after incumbent Petra Broistedt declined to run has produced a four-candidate field for the September 13 first-round vote, with Onyeka Oshionwu (Greens, backed by Volt), Florian Dinger (SPD), Ehsan Kangarani (CDU, supported by FDP), and Thomas Goes (Left) splitting voter bases in a university city where environmental, housing, and social issues dominate. Recent candidate forums on city finances, climate measures, and participation have not produced decisive shifts, leaving trader consensus tight as no one appears positioned for an outright majority and a September 27 runoff remains possible. Oshionwu’s local visibility as honorary mayor and cross-party emphasis give her the narrow edge in current pricing, while the remaining contenders draw from established party strongholds without clear consolidation. Turnout among younger and progressive voters will likely determine whether probabilities separate before election day.
