Both Christie's and Sotheby's posted near-identical first-half 2026 rebounds, with Christie's edging ahead at roughly $4.5 billion total revenue versus Sotheby's $4.4 billion, fueled by blockbuster single-owner collections such as the $630.8 million S.I. Newhouse sale and record-setting works by Pollock, Brancusi, and Rothko. Sotheby's countered with strong private sales reaching a record $826 million, the high-value Lewis collection, and consistent sell-through rates near 90 percent across fine art and luxury categories. This parity, set against a broader market recovery in trophy lots and collectibles, keeps the 2026 totals tightly balanced. Fall evening sales, additional estate dispersals, and year-end luxury auctions in New York, London, and Hong Kong represent the clearest swing factors that could shift momentum before final tallies.

Christie's
For the purposes of this market, a house's "announced total sales" is the headline global full-year figure that the house itself publishes for the 2026 calendar year, including projections, in its own year-end results announcement or press release, expressed in US dollars. Each figure will be used exactly as the house publishes it, with no adjustment for differences in what the two houses include in their totals. In 2025, this included Christie's total global sales as reported by Christie's (see: https://press.christies.com/62b-projected-global-sales-in-2025/), and Sotheby's consolidated sales as reported by Sotheby's (see: https://www.sothebys.com/en/articles/sothebys-projects-2025-consolidated-sales-of-7-billion/).
Both figures will be compared in US dollars. If a house publishes its full-year total in a currency other than US dollars, that house's own published US dollar figure for the same period will be used if one is published. If no such figure is published, the total will be converted to US dollars at the exchange rate in effect at the time of that house's announcement.
A figure announced before the end of 2026 will qualify, provided the house presents it as its total for the full 2026 calendar year. Revisions will only be considered until both auction houses have published their totals.
If the two announced figures are exactly equal, or if both houses have not published a full-year 2026 total by March 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve 50-50. If only one house has published such a total by that date, this market will resolve to that house.
This market will resolve according to official announcements published by Christie's (christies.com) and Sotheby's (sothebys.com), with a consensus of credible reporting also being used if necessary.
