Incumbent Katharina Pötter holds a lead in the September 13, 2026, Osnabrück Oberbürgermeister election, supported by her current office and established local profile. Challenger Robert Alferink, nominated by the SPD, represents the primary opposition alongside AfD candidate Thorsten Wassermann and smaller-party contenders including Thomas Groß of Die Linke. The multi-candidate field and potential runoff requirement if no one secures an outright majority keep the outcome sensitive to turnout patterns and voter preferences across center-right, center-left, and other blocs. Recent party nominations and candidate verifications have shaped positioning, while local policy debates on housing, infrastructure, and city administration could influence shifts before election day.
