Recent forecast model runs show notable spread for Wellington’s overnight minimum on September 8, with some guidance indicating radiational cooling under clearing skies could push readings to 3 °C or below while others keep values near 7–8 °C amid stronger southerly flow and residual cloud. El Niño-driven westerly anomalies and the passage of a trough are the dominant large-scale signals, modulating whether a cooler air mass or milder maritime flow arrives overnight. Historical September lows average near 7 °C, but day-to-day variability from Cook Strait wind patterns and local topography can easily shift the actual minimum by several degrees. Updated model guidance and official MetService briefings over the next 48 hours will likely tighten the range ahead of market resolution.
