Recent polling shows the CDU, Die Linke, Greens, and AfD clustered within a few points ahead of the September 20 Abgeordnetenhaus election, creating a fragmented field where no party is positioned to govern alone. Incumbent Kai Wegner’s July withdrawal after criticism of his handling of a January power outage shifted the CDU lead to Finance Senator Stefan Evers, while Die Linke’s Elif Eralp and the Greens’ Werner Graf compete for left-leaning coalitions and the SPD’s Steffen Krach seeks to stabilize the current black-red partnership. Trader consensus reflects this uncertainty, with coalition arithmetic and potential post-election negotiations likely to determine the governing mayor rather than any single party’s outright plurality. Late campaign events or turnout shifts among key voter blocs could still alter the balance before voting.
