Andy Burnham’s debut PMQs performance on September 2 showcased his shift from Greater Manchester mayor to prime minister, blending fiscal-responsibility messaging with sharp exchanges against Kemi Badenoch over borrowing costs and tax cuts like VAT removal on electricity bills. Recent market turbulence and the upcoming October 28 budget have intensified scrutiny of his spending pledges, echoing classic political theater where optimism meets opposition pushback. Traders are watching for how he balances “new style” consensus vibes with familiar barbs, especially amid defense funding debates and Tory critiques of profligacy. The next session looms as a key ratings moment, with any pivot on economic narrative or European deal hints likely to sway sentiment in this high-stakes weekly showdown.
