Andy Burnham's recent PMQs appearances as the newly installed prime minister have centered on fiscal restraint and defence commitments, with the September 9 session highlighting his refusal to choose between welfare and warfare while reaffirming 3.5% GDP defence spending by 2035 and a 3% target timeline in the upcoming spending review. These exchanges with Kemi Badenoch, amid market concerns over borrowing costs and the autumn budget slated for late October, underscore trader focus on whether he will double down on "grounded in fiscal responsibility" messaging, revisit tax-cut pledges like VAT removal on energy bills, or pivot to growth and devolution themes from his Greater Manchester tenure. The competitive dynamics around economic headwinds and opposition pressure on spending create room for momentum shifts based on fresh data releases or precursor signals ahead of the next session.
