The Democratic primary for Minnesota’s open U.S. Senate seat remains tightly contested in Ramsey County because Peggy Flanagan and Angie Craig represent distinct wings of the party—Flanagan emphasizing progressive priorities and corporate influence, Craig stressing electability and legislative results—with recent polls showing them separated by just a few points. The July 27 MPR debate highlighted differences on immigration, healthcare affordability, and foreign policy, while Flanagan’s DFL endorsement and support from Sens. Tina Smith, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren offset Craig’s stronger fundraising and outside spending. Four lesser-known candidates further fragment the field, keeping any single contender below a clear majority in early returns. Late shifts in turnout among urban DFL voters or last-minute endorsements could widen margins before the August 11 primary.
