Recent South African CPI data and central bank guidance point to 2026 annual inflation centering near 4.4%, the South African Reserve Bank’s current baseline forecast, as elevated fuel costs from Middle East supply disruptions pushed June’s headline rate to a two-year high of 5.0% before easing to 4.3% in July. The SARB raised its 2026 projection by 0.7 percentage points in May after noting persistent transport and services pressures, while maintaining the repo rate at 7% and signaling a data-dependent stance ahead of the September 23 meeting. Trader positioning clusters around the 4.4–5.0% range because monthly volatility in oil-linked components and the uncertain duration of geopolitical effects create balanced risks around the official outlook, with core inflation holding near 4.2% and expectations surveys showing only gradual convergence toward the 3% target.
