Recent polls show the SPD holding steady near 29 percent while the AfD leads at around 36 percent, six weeks before the September 20 vote, leaving the Social Democrats on course for notable seat losses from their current 34 but still competitive for mid-20s representation in the 71-seat Landtag. Incumbent Minister-President Manuela Schwesig’s modest recovery has narrowed the gap without overtaking the frontrunner, sustaining uncertainty over final proportional outcomes and coalition options. Traders’ clustering around the 18–25 seat ranges reflects this tight polling spread, modest SPD gains in the past month, and the 5 percent threshold’s impact on smaller parties. Further shifts in turnout among eastern German voters, late campaign developments on migration or the economy, or clearer coalition signals could move the SPD into higher or lower ranges before election night.
