A strengthening El Niño in the tropical Pacific is the dominant driver suppressing 2026 Atlantic hurricane activity, with Niño 3.4 sea surface temperature anomalies exceeding +2°C and forecast to intensify further. This pattern elevates vertical wind shear across the Main Development Region, counteracting near-average Atlantic sea surface temperatures that would otherwise favor development. NOAA and Colorado State University outlooks project 3–6 or 4 hurricanes respectively, well below the 1991–2020 average of seven, consistent with early-season observations of only two named storms and zero hurricanes through late July. Trader sentiment remains closely divided between 1–3 and 4–6 outcomes because peak-season model runs and late-summer steering patterns could still permit modest activity despite the El Niño signal.

If there is no storm categorized as a hurricane in the Atlantic during the specified timeframe this market will resolve to "0".
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or greater (Category 1 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale), as described at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php.
This market may resolve based on the initial NHC advisory reporting a qualifying hurricane regardless of any later advisory, retraction, best-track revision, or reanalysis that revises that storm's intensity downward. The official count will be determined by the NHC (nhc.noaa.gov) advisories.
