Recent July JOLTS data at 7.271 million, little changed from the downwardly revised 7.182 million in June, anchors trader expectations for the August release scheduled September 29. The August nonfarm payrolls surprise of +162,000 jobs versus a +56,000 consensus has reinforced labor-market resilience, yet the prior JOLTS sequence showed cooling from May peaks near 7.59 million amid softening hires and stable quits near 3.1 million. Market-implied odds remain fragmented across the 7.0–7.4 million range because participants weigh these offsetting signals against broader monetary-policy implications, including Treasury yields and the Fed’s focus on inflation versus employment trends. No single bracket commands a clear majority, underscoring the data-dependent nature of near-term labor-market assessments.
