The ECB's September 2026 policy meeting occurs amid elevated euro-area inflation pressures stemming from the Middle East conflict's impact on energy prices, with oil near $100 per barrel disrupting supply routes and feeding into broader price forecasts. Following the June 25-basis-point hike to a 2.25% deposit rate, the central bank held steady in July while signaling readiness for further tightening on a data-dependent, meeting-by-meeting basis, as staff projections raised 2026 headline inflation expectations to around 3%. Traders price a near-certain 25-basis-point increase to 2.50%, reflecting the wisdom of crowds assessing persistent energy-driven risks and limited evidence of second-round effects so far. A sharp reversal in energy costs, softer-than-expected inflation prints, or clear signs of contained wage pressures could still shift the outcome before the decision.
