Katharina Pötter, the incumbent CDU mayor since 2021, holds a commanding lead in the September 13, 2026, Osnabrück mayoral race due to typical advantages for sitting officeholders in German municipal elections, including name recognition and established local networks. Trader pricing reflects limited polling or major shifts that would challenge this positioning ahead of the vote. Main challengers include SPD nominee Robert Alferink, AfD candidate Thorsten Wassermann, Die Linke’s Thomas Groß, and lower-profile contenders such as Volker Bajus and Oliver Hasskamp, whose support remains fragmented across smaller parties. Recent candidate nominations and party announcements through mid-2026 have clarified the field without altering the overall competitive dynamics. A potential runoff would occur on September 27 if no candidate secures an outright majority in the first round.
