Round-of-16 matches on September 17 determine quarterfinalists amid high temperatures that have shifted play to evening sessions. Absences among some doubles specialists have not thinned the singles field as dramatically, maintaining a wide range of realistic paths to the final eight while underscoring the event's overall unpredictability in a high-points Open tournament.
