Israeli forces have conducted sustained ground operations and maintained positions in southern Lebanon since early March 2026, focused on establishing buffer zones south of the Litani River amid clashes with Hezbollah following the escalation tied to U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. Airstrikes have targeted Beirut's southern suburbs and other areas, yet ground advances have remained concentrated near the border in locations such as Bint Jbeil and Khiam rather than extending northward. U.S.-brokered framework agreements in June and July 2026 have produced phased Israeli withdrawals from select southern pilot zones, with Lebanese Army units beginning deployments and a fragile truce in place despite occasional ceasefire violations and incidents involving troops. Diplomatic channels, international calls for restraint, and the emphasis on Hezbollah disarmament north of the Litani continue to shape the operational scope, while any shift toward Beirut would require significant changes in military objectives or breakdown of current mediation efforts.
