State Senator Aisha Wahab holds an early lead in vote counting from the June 2 nonpartisan primary for California's 14th congressional district, an open seat following Eric Swalwell's decision to pursue the governor's race instead of re-election. BART board director Melissa Hernandez trails in second among several Democratic candidates, while Republican real estate investor Wendy Huang ranks third in preliminary tallies from the eastern San Francisco Bay Area district. California's top-two system advances the leading pair to the November general regardless of party. A separate special election primary is scheduled for June 16 to fill the current vacancy, with overlapping candidates including Wahab, Hernandez, and Huang.
