**The election for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Landtag on 20 September 2026 occurs amid heightened political stakes in Germany’s eastern states.** AfD leads recent polls at 35–36 percent, ahead of the incumbent SPD at 28–29 percent, creating a polarized contest that has drawn national attention and prompted discussions of tactical voting and countermobilization against potential AfD gains. This dynamic, combined with the state’s place in a series of September elections (following Saxony-Anhalt), has increased media coverage and campaign intensity compared with the lower-profile 2021 vote, when turnout reached 70.8 percent. Recent reporting on disinformation efforts and the broader “super election year” context further elevates visibility, supporting trader expectations that participation will rise. Historical patterns in competitive eastern German state races show that such salience often lifts engagement, especially when small-party thresholds and coalition possibilities remain fluid. No major structural changes to voting rules or registration have altered baseline expectations, leaving the competitive environment as the dominant near-term driver of the 70 percent implied probability for higher turnout.
