Emmanuel Macron's ineligibility after two consecutive terms has opened a crowded field for the April 18 and May 2, 2027, presidential ballots under France's two-round system. Marine Le Pen's July 2026 appeal ruling upheld her embezzlement conviction but shortened her ineligibility, enabling her National Rally candidacy announcement; recent polls place her or party leader Jordan Bardella atop first-round voting intentions near 36 percent. Édouard Philippe has formally launched a center-right bid, while The Republicans endorsed Bruno Retailleau without a primary. A fragmented left plans an October 2026 primary, and multiple other figures from Renaissance, La France Insoumise, and smaller parties have declared or signaled interest. These developments, alongside ongoing party positioning, shape trader focus on which candidates ultimately qualify for the ballot.
