Recent yen strength has narrowed the USD/JPY range, with the pair trading near 156 following a sharp drop from above 160 amid heightened expectations for a Bank of Japan rate hike at its September 17-18 meeting and potential further Ministry of Finance intervention. Hawkish BoJ commentary, including signals of possible consecutive increases, contrasts with mixed U.S. data that has tempered some near-term Fed hike bets while keeping policy divergence in focus. Trader consensus on Polymarket assigns the highest implied probability (39%) to a 150-160 close by year-end, reflecting the current level, ongoing carry-trade unwind risks, and forecasts from firms such as JPMorgan that see modest upside to around 164 offset by yen-supportive policy normalization. Key near-term catalysts include upcoming U.S. CPI and labor market releases.
