South Korea's equity market, tracked by the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY), has delivered exceptional 2026 gains exceeding 68% year-to-date through mid-July, fueled by AI-driven semiconductor demand that propelled SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics to outsized returns. However, the primary near-term driver is the sharp correction following the Bank of Korea's July 16 rate hike of 25 basis points to 2.75%, its first tightening move since 2023, enacted amid 3.2% June inflation and a weaker won. The KOSPI's 6.4% drop that day, alongside EWY's steep decline, reflects global chip-sector volatility and profit-taking after June peaks. Traders are monitoring whether sustained AI memory pricing and export momentum can stabilize prices ahead of upcoming economic data and potential further policy signals.
