Major tech firms continue restructuring to redirect resources toward artificial intelligence initiatives, driving trader consensus toward an 82% implied probability that 2026 information-sector layoffs will exceed 2025’s 447,000 total per FRED data. Year-to-date trackers such as TrueUp and layoffs.fyi show 174,000–206,000 tech roles eliminated through early August at a faster daily pace than last year, with companies including Microsoft (4,800 positions in July), Oracle, Amazon, and Meta citing AI automation, efficiency gains from large language models, and heavy capital spending on model training as primary factors. Overall U.S. layoffs have slowed, yet the tech sector accounts for over 30% of cuts amid ongoing workflow automation. Remaining earnings calls and any shifts in AI investment pace represent the main near-term variables that could alter the annual comparison.
