Growing AI demand and terrestrial constraints on power, land, and water have accelerated interest in orbital data centers, with trader sentiment reflecting measured optimism. Starcloud placed an NVIDIA H100 in orbit on Starcloud-1 in November 2025 and trained a large language model there in December, while SpaceX filed FCC plans for up to a million AI satellites and Google advanced Project Suncatcher with TPU-equipped prototypes targeted for 2027 launches alongside Planet. Other startups like Aetherflux and Orbital submitted large-constellation applications, yet full-scale deployments face radiation hardening, inter-satellite links, and economic hurdles. Near-term resolution hinges on whether any qualifying launch—requiring at least 100 data-center-grade accelerators—occurs before key 2027 milestones.
