Recent BoJ communications and insider reports have positioned a 25-basis-point rate increase as the dominant market-implied outcome at 84% for the September 17–18 meeting, driven by core inflation forecasts exceeding the 2% target from the second half of fiscal 2026 alongside persistent yen weakness and AI-related demand pressures. After lifting the policy rate to 1.0% in June—the highest level since 1995—the central bank held steady in July while flagging upside price risks and openness to accelerating the tightening pace beyond its prior roughly twice-yearly cadence. Traders’ skin-in-the-game consensus, reflected in overnight swaps pricing an early move at around 80%, incorporates resilient wage growth and balanced economic risks, though a data surprise or sharper yen appreciation could still shift probabilities ahead of the decision.
