France’s two-round presidential system, with the first round scheduled for April 2027, favors candidates who consolidate broad support early, as only the top two advance. Recent July 2026 polls show National Rally leader Marine Le Pen leading first-round intentions at 35-37% after announcing her candidacy following court adjustments to her eligibility, positioning her strongly for a runoff spot. The second qualifying place remains contested, with center-right former prime minister Édouard Philippe often polling ahead of other centrists like Gabriel Attal and far-left figure Jean-Luc Mélenchon, whose support has risen modestly. A crowded field of declared candidates across the center, right, and left continues to fragment anti-RN votes, while RN momentum stems from sustained polling strength since the 2024 legislative elections. Traders watch for further candidate consolidations or shifts in turnout dynamics ahead of the vote.
