Iceland's closely contested referendum on 29 August 2026 asks voters whether to resume EU accession negotiations suspended since 2013, with current polling showing a near tie that underpins the 53.5% implied probability for a yes outcome. The centre-left coalition government under Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir secured parliamentary approval earlier this year after including the vote in its December 2024 agreement, framing the question as a procedural step rather than a direct membership decision. Key drivers include domestic debates over fisheries management under the EU's common policy, sovereignty concerns, potential euro adoption, and economic integration benefits, alongside broader security and Arctic considerations. Any positive result would likely trigger talks by late 2026, but full accession would require a subsequent referendum. Late-campaign polling shifts, turnout among fishing communities, or clarifying statements on negotiation terms could alter the narrow balance before voting concludes.
