Recent New Zealand inflation data, with the June 2026 CPI rising to 4.1% year-over-year from 3.1% in March amid elevated energy prices from Middle East developments, underpins the closely matched odds for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s October Official Cash Rate decision. The RBNZ’s July 25 basis point hike to 2.50%—its first tightening in over three years—reflects efforts to anchor inflation back to the 2% target midpoint, with forecasts showing a near-term peak near 4.3% before easing. This leaves traders split between a hold at 37.5% implied probability and a further 25 basis point increase at 29.5%, driven by uncertainty over whether incoming labor market, growth, and core inflation readings will confirm persistent pressures or signal sufficient moderation from the recent policy shift.
