Recent seismic monitoring by the USGS shows subdued global activity through early August 2026, with only a handful of confirmed magnitude 5.5+ events so far in the window—including a 5.5 near Egypt on August 3, a 5.7 in Nevada the same day, and isolated larger events such as the 6.3s in the Philippines and New Zealand/Kermadec region around August 5, plus several 5.6s reported on August 8. Global averages for M5.5+ quakes run near 10–15 per week, driven by ongoing plate boundary strain at subduction zones and transform faults, yet weekly totals vary due to aftershock clustering and stress transfer. The closely matched market odds around 7–9 events reflect this subdued activity to date plus the remaining hours before resolution on August 9, where new events, aftershocks, or magnitude revisions could shift the final USGS tally. Trader sentiment balances the low likelihood of a sudden swarm against normal background rates and the short remaining window.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, with the minimum magnitude set to 5.5 and the date parameters set to the relevant dates for this market's timeframe (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until August 11, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
