Tsarukyan entered the UFC 331 co-main event as the clear lightweight contender favorite against surging Brazilian striker Mauricio Ruffy, needing a dominant finish to strengthen his case for a title shot after withdrawing from a prior opportunity and sitting out extended periods. Ruffy brought momentum from recent first-round knockouts and elite striking power, creating pre-fight narratives around stylistic contrast, clinch exchanges, and whether the longer fighter could test Tsarukyan early. Commentators were expected to highlight Tsarukyan’s wrestling pedigree, Ruffy’s knockout threat, title implications against champion Justin Gaethje, and any visible damage or control time in what was positioned as a five-round statement bout at Crypto.com Arena.
