These actions, including missile and drone attacks on tankers and a declared naval embargo focused on Saudi shipping, have cut daily vessel transits roughly in half and prompted rerouting, though commercial traffic continues at reduced levels without a complete blockade. Iranian directives reportedly positioned the Houthis to fully close the waterway under certain escalation triggers, yet recent denials of tolls or total shutdown, combined with signs of de-escalation in the wider conflict, have kept trader-implied probabilities for near-term effective closure low. Upcoming diplomatic or military developments in the Red Sea theater remain the key variables that could alter shipping volumes or trigger market resolution.
