This follows their July 2026 declaration of a naval blockade targeting Saudi-linked vessels, which triggered a sharp drop in tanker transits—down roughly 39%—and prompted rerouting, insurance adjustments, and selective attacks on ships and coastal facilities. Ongoing clashes, with over 120 reported deaths in recent days, coincide with broader regional tensions involving Iran-aligned actors and disrupted flows through related chokepoints. Trader assessments of effective closure hinge on whether Houthi territorial gains or sustained interdiction can halt commercial traffic without triggering decisive external intervention.
