South Korea-focused ETF EWY, heavily weighted toward memory chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix, has traded near $178 recently after a sharp July correction from mid-2026 peaks above $220 amid profit-taking and leveraged-position unwinding. Strong 2026 YTD gains exceeding 75% reflected AI-driven semiconductor demand, though recent volatility tied to global chip cycles and potential Bank of Korea rate adjustments has tempered momentum. The week of August 24 features key releases including August inflation, consumer and business confidence surveys, and government bond auctions that could influence KRW movements and equity flows. Traders price near-term levels around these data points and broader tech sentiment, consistent with historical sensitivity to export and rate signals.
