Israeli forces remain positioned in southern Lebanon as part of efforts to create a buffer zone south of the Litani River following the March 2026 escalation, but have conducted only air and artillery strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut's southern suburbs rather than ground operations into the capital municipality itself. Ongoing U.S.-mediated talks in Rome and other venues through August 2026 have focused on phased withdrawals, Lebanese army deployment in pilot zones, and Hezbollah disarmament conditions, with recent incidents such as the killing of two Israeli soldiers prompting limited retaliatory strikes but no shift toward deeper incursions. Trader consensus reflected in current low probabilities for near-term entry by August 31 aligns with the absence of announced plans or battlefield movements indicating an advance on Beirut, amid persistent diplomatic pressure for de-escalation and historical patterns of operations remaining concentrated in the south.
