China's July CPI print of 0.5% year-on-year—below consensus and marking a six-month low—set a soft baseline for the August reading, with food deflation (notably pork at -13.3% and vegetables) and cooling energy prices as the main drags amid weak household demand and a prolonged property slump. Analysts highlight a favorable base effect and seasonal rebounds in vegetable and pork prices as likely lifts for August, supporting forecasts clustered around 0.7%. Persistent core pressures near 0.9% and limited policy transmission so far reinforce the 0.5–0.8% range as the modal outcomes among traders, while stronger export momentum and any weather-driven food spikes keep a modest tail for 0.9% or higher. Weak July retail sales and fixed-asset investment data underscore downside risks from subdued domestic activity. The August data release, expected around September 9, will resolve the market.
