The trial of Duane “Keefe D” Davis opened this week in Las Vegas, with prosecutors highlighting his own detailed admissions in a 2019 memoir and multiple interviews as central evidence that he supplied the gun and directed the 1996 drive-by killing of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur. Those statements, made years after the unsolved murder, form the backbone of the state’s case against the former South Side Compton Crips leader, who now claims they were fabrications to boost book sales. Early testimony on autopsy details and gang associates has kept momentum behind a conviction, yet the defense emphasizes the decades-long lack of charges and questions the reliability of the confessions. With weeks of witnesses ahead, traders see a modest edge for a guilty verdict but recognize the inherent uncertainty of a jury weighing decades-old claims in a high-profile rap case.
