Romania's ongoing governmental crisis, triggered by the May 2026 no-confidence vote that ousted Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's pro-European coalition, centers on President Nicușor Dan's efforts to secure a new cabinet through successive prime minister-designates. Two prior nominees, Eugen Tomac and Adrian Veștea, failed to win the required parliamentary majority amid fractures within center-right parties like the PNL and resistance from the Social Democrats (PSD) and far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). With AUR leading polls and the 60-day constitutional window for appointments narrowing, traders focus on prospects for a minority government, further nominations, or a snap election that could shift power dynamics before the scheduled 2028 vote. Economic pressures, including the EU's largest budget deficit, add urgency to resolving the deadlock.
