Iceland’s closely balanced referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations, scheduled for 29 August 2026, reflects divided domestic priorities under Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir’s centre-left coalition. Support for restarting talks, suspended since 2013, stems from economic integration and security considerations in the Arctic, yet faces resistance over fisheries policy, national sovereignty, and euro adoption. Parliament approved the vote in May after the coalition agreement committed to a referendum by 2027, with recent polls showing slim majorities favoring resumption. The government campaigns for a Yes outcome while urging EU restraint to avoid perceptions of external influence, and the Council has signaled readiness to proceed if voters approve. Traders price the narrow edge amid uncertainty over turnout and last-minute shifts on core sectoral concerns.
