The San Diego Padres (71-61) enter as favorites at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates (64-69) at Petco Park, buoyed by a strong 40-27 home record and playoff positioning just ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final NL wild-card spot. Paul Skenes (9-11, 3.95 ERA) takes the ball for Pittsburgh opposite Michael King (8-9, 3.38 ERA), giving the Pirates a top-tier starter who has limited damage in recent outings despite the team’s 30-37 road mark and 17.5-game deficit in the NL Central. Multiple injuries on both sides—including key absences for the Padres in the rotation and bullpen and for the Pirates in the lineup—have thinned rosters, while the Padres’ recent surge (21-7 since late July) has shifted momentum. The series opener, a 3-2 Pirates win in 12 innings, highlighted tight pitching and late-game execution that could keep implied probabilities narrow in subsequent games.
