Both Australians meet in the first round of the 2026 National Bank Open on outdoor hard courts in Montreal, with James Duckworth holding the ranking edge near world No. 83 to Christopher O’Connell’s position roughly 40 spots lower. Their head-to-head on hard favors Duckworth, who won their most recent hard-court encounter at the 2022 US Open, though O’Connell claimed their latest overall meeting on grass in 2025. O’Connell arrives with stronger recent momentum after a Challenger title on grass, while Duckworth’s form shows inconsistency with mixed results in the lead-up. Both players have limited main-draw success this season, making recent fitness, serve effectiveness on the faster surface, and any late adjustments to their schedules key variables ahead of the match.
