Zizou Bergs enters this US Open first-round match on hard courts as the clear favorite against Carlos Taberner, reflecting the substantial ranking gap (No. 35 vs. No. 400) and Bergs’ stronger recent results. Bergs, seeded 31st and fresh off a career-high ranking of No. 33, secured his first ATP title at Eastbourne on grass in June before advancing to the Wimbledon third round; his North American hard-court swing featured mixed outcomes, including wins over Sebastian Baez but early exits against higher-ranked opponents. Taberner, returning from a six-month abdominal injury layoff that sidelined him after the Australian Open, has competed primarily in clay-court challengers with limited success and minimal hard-court exposure at this level. The matchup pits Bergs’ consistent serve and baseline game against Taberner’s need to regain match fitness on a surface where the Belgian holds a clear edge in experience and current form.
