Iceland's closely contested referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations, scheduled for 29 August 2026, reflects a balance between the centre-left government's parliamentary approval in May and longstanding public divisions over sovereignty, fisheries policy, and economic alignment. Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir's coalition advanced the measure citing geopolitical security needs and trade considerations within the existing EEA framework, yet opposition highlights risks to national control and historical reluctance dating to the 2013 freeze. Trader sentiment hovers near even odds due to uncertain turnout and campaign dynamics, with late polling shifts, party endorsements, or statements on negotiation timelines potentially tipping probabilities in either direction before voting concludes.
