Carlos Alcaraz returns to competitive singles after a four-month right wrist injury layoff, facing Roman Safiullin in the US Open first round on outdoor hard courts without prior tournament tune-ups. The defending champion and Australian Open winner enters with a tied 1-1 head-to-head, though Safiullin’s prior win came on indoor hard. Safiullin, ranked around 98-99, arrives after a Wimbledon fourth-round run that included wins over higher-ranked players, but with recent hard-court losses. Trader consensus reflects Alcaraz’s superior movement, shot-making, and Grand Slam pedigree as the dominant factor, tempered by rust concerns that could allow the Russian baseline aggressor to claim sets in the best-of-five format.
