Brandon Nakashima enters the US Open second-round matchup against Alex Michelsen as the clear favorite, buoyed by a career-high ranking of No. 17 and a strong 31-17 record in 2026, including 21-9 on hard courts. He reached the Montreal final and Cincinnati semifinals with wins over players like Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz, showcasing improved baseline power, serving consistency, and net play under new coaching. Michelsen, ranked No. 45 at age 22, advanced past a qualifier but has posted mixed hard-court results this summer, with early exits against top competition in Montreal and Cincinnati. No prior head-to-head exists, and the hard-court surface aligns with Nakashima’s recent momentum while testing Michelsen’s ability to sustain rallies against higher-ranked opponents.
