Darderi, the ATP No. 22 with a career-high of 16 and five titles, enters the US Open first-round matchup against qualifier Wendelken (No. 196) as the clear favorite on hard courts. Darderi reached the Canadian Masters quarterfinals and Australian Open fourth round earlier in 2026 but dropped a lopsided loss in Winston-Salem; his Grand Slam experience includes multiple third-round appearances. Wendelken, a 24-year-old Brit, earned his main-draw debut via strong qualifying wins on hard, including a three-set victory over Gaubas, and sits at a career-high ranking after consistent Challenger results. The best-of-five format and surface favor the higher-ranked Italian’s serve and baseline consistency against Wendelken’s limited top-level exposure.
